Printing service is used by most organizations for different functions such as marketing and intra-company communications. Therefore it is helpful to learn about the basic working of the frequently used printing process called offset printing.

The customers and the printers like offset printing due to its cost effectiveness for the production of large number of prints. The customers giving big printing orders are advised by the printers to choose offset printing due to this reason.

The ink employed during offset printing has oil as the medium and is insoluble in water. The offset printing is so called because the designs are transferred in an indirect way from the plates to the paper by use of rubber blankets as the agents.

First step is to prepare the graphics. Previously the images were prepared by creating film negatives and were then transmitted to printing plates made of aluminum. In the current times, the printers can use the image setting system for preparing the plates directly. This plate is then put on a cylinder with the correct side up. Then the water and ink are spread on the image plates, one after another. The ink is poured over the image and to stop it from overflowing, a thin layer of water is put over the remaining part of the plate.

Next, the image is turned around when it is put on to a rubber blanket which is attached to another cylinder. The image is inverted to its correct side by transmitting the image to sheets that have been cut in line with the need and are placed on a different cylinder.

The final steps of the printing job involve things such as stapling, gluing or organizing the printed sheets according to the instructions of the client, and any printing company should easily manage these.

The most usual form of offset printing uses light-sensitive chemicals and photographic techniques in transferring images and typing from source materials to printing plates. The source materials may be the current photographic print and typeset text. However, it is more common, with the prevalence of computers and digital images, that the master copy exists only as data in a digital publishing system.
