Types Of Ants Commonly Seen
Ants are found the world over, from the hottest deserts to the lush green rainforests. They can be seen in our yards, in our homes, and even in our workplaces. Ants live in colonies, & in a single colony are over a million other ants. There are several different ant species. Some of the better-known varieties are the army ants, driver ants, honeypot ants, weaver ants, leafcutter ants, fire ants, silver ants, and bulldog ants. Colonies of ants are comprised of three classes of ants, namely the workers, the soldiers, and the single queen.
Ants are one of the most common creatures in the world and are of different types. In spite of their tiny appearance, they could hurt humans as well as animals.
The behavior of ants may vary depending on their class. Ants’ color may vary from black or red to brown and their size vary from 2 to 25mm.
Army ants and driver ants are highly developed ants. Army ants are seen in South America and driver ants can be found in Africa. Unlike other species, they do not have permanent nests. Their colonies reproduce by two ways – fission or nuptial flights.
Weaver ants, on the other hand, are those that build their nests in trees by putting leaves together. These creatures first force the leaves together with a bridge of workers and then they sew the leaves by pressing silk producing larvae on the leaves.
Honeypot ants generally have enlarged abdomens. They usually live in hot, dry places such as Australia, Africa, North America & they can be found in deserts as well. They are also considered a great delicacy in some places.
Leafcutter ants feed exclusively on fungus and live only within their colony. These ants come in different sized classes to perform various duties that are to be performed in the colony.
Another unique type of ant is the fire ant. These ants have a sac of poison that is filled with piperidine alkaloids.
The Australian bulldog ants are those with only 1 chromosome and these are amongst the biggest & most primitive varieties of ants.
